Babe Ruth and the curse of the Bambino

Babe Ruth, also known by his nickname "the Bambino", was the most famous baseball player ever. He spent 22 seasons in Major League Baseball and was known for his hitting. Ruth set career records for home runs (714) and runs batted in (2,217). He entered the major leagues with the Boston Red Sox as a starting pitcher, but after he was sold to the New York Yankees in 1919, he converted to a full time right fielder. He helped the Yankees win seven pennants and four World Series titles.

The Curse of the Bambino was a superstition created because of the failure of the Boston Red Sox to win the World Series in the 86-year period from 1918 to 2004. The curse began when the Red Sox sold Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees in1919. Before that, the Red Sox had been one of the most successful baseball teams, with five World Series titles. After The Bambino left, it took them 86 years to win it again, while the previously poor Yankees became the most successful team in history. The curse ended for Red Sox fans in 2004, when their team famously came from a 0-3 deficit to beat the Yankees in the 2004 American League Championship Series and then went on to sweep the St. Louis Cardinals to win the World Series.
The curse had been a big part of Boston culture in those 86 years. The best selling book about it by Dan Shaughnessy, called The Curse of the Bambino, became required reading in some high school English classes in New England.
Ruth retired in 1935 after a short stint with the Boston Braves, and the following year, he became one of the first five players to be elected into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.

Bubba Watson

Gerry Lester Watson, Jr. is the American professional golfer known as ''Bubba'', who has just won the 2012 Masters, beating Louis Oosthuizen in a playoff. Oosthuizen and Watson made par on the 1st extra hole, the 18th, and then on the 2nd extra hole, the 10th, both golfers drove their tee shots into the woods to the right of the hole. Oosthuizen's second was short of the green and Watson played an incredible shot to within ten feet from the hole, made his par and Oosthuizen bogeyed
Watson is one of the few left-handed golfers on tour, and only the second one to win The Masters. He is known for his tremendous length of the tee, and is the longest driver on the PGA Tour, being one of the few players who can hit a ball over 350 yards.
What I like about him is his unusual swing which looks like he has taught himself. Like Phil Mickelson, he also has a way of imagining shots that others might not try. Here he is hitting that memorable one last night to the 10th green at Augusta, and winning the biggest golf tournament of them all: The Masters.

Leo Messi -The Greatest Ever?

Born in 1987 in Buenos Aires, Leo Messi was signed by FC Barcelona in 2000. Making his debut in the 2004–05 season, he broke his team record for the youngest footballer to score a league goal. Barcelona won La Liga in Messi's debut season and the Champions in 2006.
His breakthrough was the 2006–07 season; he became a first team regular, scored a hat-trick vs Real Madrid and finished with 14 goals in 26 league games. This was eclipsed in the 2009–10 campaign, where Messi scored 47 goals in all competitions, equalling Ronaldo's record total for Barcelona. He surpassed this record again in the 2010–11 season with 53 goals in all competitions and after scoring 12 goals in the 2010–11 Champions League, Messi became only the third player (after Gerd Müller and Jean-Pierre Papin) to top-score in three successive European Champion Clubs' Cup campaigns. He is also only the 4th player to win three Ballon d'Ors, after Johan Cruyff, Michel Platini and Marco Van Basten. And yet he is still a discreet, shy person. This is why I like him. Time Magazine recently suggested he may be the greatest player ever. I think they are right. Here is me with the greatest, in Barcelona airport, summer 2009.

Usain Bolt - The Fastest Man in the World

Here is the amazing video of Usain Bolt in 2009 breaking his own Olympic record to win at 9.58 seconds, a new world record!!!

Bolt was born in 1986 in Sherwood Content, a small town in Jamaica. His parents ran the local grocery store and Bolt spent his time playing cricket and football on the street with his brother. "When I was young, I didn’t really think about anything other than sports", he said recently.

As a child in primary school he first began to show his sprinting potential by running in the annual national primary-schools' meeting for his parish. By the age of twelve, Bolt had become the school's fastest runner over 100 metres. He won his first annual high school championships medal in 2001, taking the silver in the 200 metres with a time of 22.04 seconds.
Pablo McNeil, his coach, sometimes gets frustrated because Bolt is always doing funny things and practical jokes.  I think he is a 'messer', but he is the fastest 'messer' ever over 100 metres.
I love to watch him and I will follow him in this summer's Olympic Games (in London).
